The
Green Bookshop
India’s
Environmental Bookstore
The
Green Bookshop, as the name
suggests, specializes in books on
ecology, environment, forestry, wildlife
and related subjects. Tucked away
in the foothills of the Himalayas,
in the picturesque valley of Dehra
Dun, the Green Bookshop
is a hub for conservationists, ecologists
and wildlife enthusiasts and specialists
from across the world.
The
aim of the bookstore has been to spread
environmental awareness and promote
literature on ecological conservation.
“The essence of our bookstore”,
as Upendra Arora, the founder and
owner of the bookshop states, “has
been to provide a platform for experts
and specialists, bring in those who
are interested and also enlighten
those who may not be aware of the
issues at stake.”

As
a conscientious bookstore, every effort
is made to promote the reading habit
among the citizens of the city. The
Green Bookshop organises regular book
readings, meetings and launches to
bring booklovers together. Inaugurated
by well-known animal activist, Maneka
Gandhi, the bookstore has had various
luminaries browse its shelves. Some
of the names include Indira Gandhi,
Salim Ali, Nani Palkiwala, Khushwant
Singh, Peter Hopkirk, Ramachandra
Guha, T.N.Seshan, T.N. Chaturvedi.
All leaders in their fields and -
no coincidence - avid readers.

“A
favourite, of course,” the staff
confesses, “is renowned author
Ruskin Bond.” The bookshop has
hosted book readings and signing sessions
with the author and even celebrated
his 50th birthday at the bookshop,
with scores of his fans.
